When was Jacob Wetterling Foundation (JWF) founded?
Jacob Wetterling Foundation was established as a 501 (c)(3) organization in St. Joseph, Minnesota on January 24, 1990. The organization was cofounded by Jerry and Patty Wetterling with the help and support of others. Through the investigation of Jacob’s case, his parents discovered that most often children are abducted for purposes of sexual exploitation. With this information in mind, along with other community safety needs made apparent by Jacob’s case, the Wetterlings started the Foundation. The Foundation’s goals were to assist victim families with missing children and to educate the public, law enforcement and legislators, and other organizations interested in the protection of children about the problems of child sexual exploitation and abduction.
What is JWF’s mission?
Jacob Wetterling Foundation’s mission is to protect children from sexual exploitation and abduction.
Do Jerry and Patty Wetterling run JWF?
Patty and Jerry Wetterling cofounded the Foundation, but have never been employed as paid staff members of JWF. Jerry serves as one of ten voluntary board members of the agency—his current term will expire June 2005. Patty has served as a board member and volunteer spokesperson, but since 2004 has not had an active role in the Foundation.
Is JWF affiliated with a political party?
Child sexual exploitation and abduction are very concerning public health and social issues that are best addressed through coordinated community efforts. Through the support and work of individuals and groups representing all backgrounds, we envision the creation of a safer world for our children—a world in which children are free from victimization.
Jacob Wetterling Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian agency that does not discriminate against race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status or sexual orientation. What type of work does JWF do?
JWF has two programs: prevention education and victims assistance. We work to develop and implement innovative, community-based prevention education initiatives with our “partner” organizations. In addition to these important projects, JWF provides victims and their families with support and assistance. JWF also partners with other agencies to impact the drafting and passage of legislation on behalf of the safety and protection of children in Minnesota and nationally. JWF interacts with print, radio and television media as a subject matter expert. In 2004, JWF completed over 60 interviews with local, regional and national media.
How many victim families did JWF help in 2004?
Last year, JWF’s case management staff assisted nearly 80 families as they navigated the painful process of locating a missing child or finding services and assistance for sexually exploited children. In addition, JWF staff answered over 1000 calls from individuals or groups requesting information or resources related to victimization of children and personal safety.
